Great Rift Valley
Lake Nakuru
A compact soda-lake park famous for flamingos, both species of rhino, and an easy pairing with the Mara or Naivasha.
Rift Valley jewel
Why we keep sending people here
Nakuru is small enough to feel generous. You can see rhino, flamingo sheets, and a lion in one morning, then still be on the escarpment for a late lunch. Water levels change the birds from year to year — we say so, rather than promising a postcard that the lake may have moved.
Best time: Year-round; flamingo numbers move with the water.
Getting there
About two and a half hours from Nairobi, down the escarpment.
Where you sleep
Lodges on the park fence or a night in Naivasha if you want a boat on another lake the next morning.
Who it suits
Short breaks, families, and birders who want a lot of species before lunch.
