The Mara is not a checklist. It is a working grassland the size of a small country, cut by the Mara River and dotted with balanites trees where leopards cache their kills. In the green season the grass is long and the cats are harder; in the dry months the plains open and the migration pours in from the Serengeti. We time your days around light, not around a fixed circuit of picnic sites.
Best time: July – October for the migration; year-round for big cats.
Getting there
Five to six hours by road from Nairobi, or about 45 minutes by light aircraft from Wilson.
Where you sleep
Tented camps on the reserve edge, and private conservancies if you want night drives and fewer vehicles.
Who it suits
First-time safari guests, photographers, families, and anyone who wants the highest chance of lions before lunch.
